The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland is committed to assisting men who are interested in discerning God’s call to serve as diocesan priests. This journey can bring questions and uncertainties, but you do not have to walk it alone. Your parish priest and our office are here to accompany you as the Church discerns alongside you. Discerning the Priesthood in MaineDiscerning a vocation to the priesthood is ultimately about listening—learning to recognize how Christ speaks into your life and invites you to serve Him. Vocations are essential to the future of the Church in Maine, and the Diocese of Portland is committed to walking with men who feel drawn to this possibility. Here, discernment is grounded in prayer, honest conversation, and a supportive community that desires only to help you discover the path God intends for you.
The Diocese of Portland forms men who will serve our communities with fidelity, generosity, and pastoral skill. Seminarians prepare for the priesthood through years of prayer, study, and supervised ministry, learning to shepherd God’s people with compassion, preach and teach the faith, and celebrate the sacraments upon which our Catholic life depends. Discerning in Maine means discovering what faithful priestly ministry looks like in our coastal towns, rural parishes, and close‑knit communities.
Most importantly, discernment is not a commitment—it's an exploration. Whether you are experiencing the first stirrings of a call or actively considering seminary, you are invited to take the next step with openness and courage. If you believe God may be calling you to the priesthood or to serve in the Diocese of Portland, we are here to support you. God speaks in many ways, and when your heart is open, He will show you the way forward.

Prayer for Vocations
Loving Father, you sent your Son so that all might come to know the truth and be saved. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, you continue his work through the Church. Your Son reminded his disciples that the harvest was indeed plentiful but the laborers few. Following his instructions, we beg you to call many to ordained ministry and religious life. Grant them the grace to hear you and to respond wholeheartedly. May Mary Immaculate, the mother of your Son and the patroness of our diocese, intercede for us. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
