The seven sacraments are visible signs of God’s grace that draw Catholics into deeper communion with Christ and the Church. They are grouped as sacraments of initiation, communion and vocation, and healing—marking key moments of faith, mission, mercy, and grace.
Sacraments of Initiation
Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist form the foundation of Christian life, welcoming believers into the Church, strengthening them with the Holy Spirit, and uniting them with Christ in the Eucharist.
In the Diocese of Portland, children receive these sacraments in the restored order: Baptism as infants, then Confirmation and First Holy Communion at the same Mass around the age of reason, typically between ages 7 and 9.
Sacraments of Communion & Vocation
Marriage and Holy Orders are sacraments of lifelong commitment, calling spouses and ordained ministers to serve God’s people and build up the Church.
Sacraments of Healing
Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick reveal Christ’s mercy, offering forgiveness, strength, comfort, and hope in times of sin, illness, suffering, or need.
