The Office of Professional Responsibility exists to enable the diocese to maintain a high level of integrity, trust, and confidence with respect to the investigation of complaints that are brought forth.
The office is charged with promptly and professionally responding to and investigating all allegations of sexual abuse of minors in the diocese, as required by the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, as well as with investigating all misconduct complaints filed against anyone serving the Church in ministry, employment, or in a volunteer position.
Regarding these investigations, the office ensures that all civil laws that pertain to required reporting of offenses are adhered to and cooperates with local authorities if warranted.

Diocesan Review Board

The Review Board was established in February 2003 to advise the bishop regarding complaints received regarding of sexual abuse of minors by diocesan clergy, employees or volunteers.
The members of the board are respected business and community leaders who are selected for their demonstrated independence, fairness, and outstanding expertise in various fields.
These fields include psychiatry, law enforcement, law, and education. The board reviews and assesses complaints received of sexual abuse of minors or vulnerable adults, monitors the internal investigation and subsequent conclusion, then makes recommendations to the bishop.

LeadershipMichael Magalski, a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, serves as the director of the Office of Professional Responsibility. Previously, he served as a Special Agent with the United States Secret Service, the last 17 years as the Resident Agent in Charge of the Portland, Maine office.
