The Office of Campus Ministry oversees Catholic ministry to the higher education community—students, faculty, staff, and administrators—at both public and private residential colleges and universities within the Diocese of Portland.
Campus ministry takes a variety of forms, including student-led centers, clubs, or councils supported by a campus minister and/or priest chaplain. On some campuses, a new model is emerging in which campus ministry is entrusted to a local parish and pastor, creating a “parish-based” approach to serving the academic community.
The office is overseen by Campus Ministry Coordinator Sister Jacinta Coscia, FSE, who serves as a central point of contact for campus ministers at colleges and universities across the diocese, fostering communication, collaboration, and shared mission. A Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist, Sr. Jacinta also serves as the campus minister for Bates College.
The Diocese of Portland has partnered with Newman Connection to introduce high school seniors with the Office of Campus Ministry of the college or university that they plan to attend in or the chaplain of the branch of military. Maine institutions of higher education are included on this site, helping to foster faith and friendships on the campuses of our diocese.
Since its initial construction in 1971, the Newman Center at UMaine has become a stronghold of faith for young Catholics in central Maine and beyond.
The center was recently demolished, rebuilt, and renovated in response to growing demand for space and outdated facilities. In October of 2025, Our Lady of Wisdom Church was rededicated as one of the newest churches in our diocese. Read More about Our Lady of Wisdom Church & Newman Center
