Discerning a Call ot the Permanent Diaconate

Discerning a vocation to the Permanent Diaconate is a journey of prayer, reflection, and openness to the Holy Spirit. The Church teaches that a vocation is a call from God—a response to God’s invitation to serve His people in a particular way. As you explore the possibility of becoming a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Portland, know that you are not walking this path alone. The Church accompanies you, supports you, and prays with you as you seek to discover God’s will.

Discernment is the spiritual process of listening for God’s voice in your life. It is not a quick decision or a moment of sudden clarity—rather, it unfolds over time through:

• Prayer and quiet reflection
• Conversations with trusted spiritual guides
• Growing desire to serve the Church
• Openness to the needs of the People of God
• A deepening love for Christ and His mission

If you feel drawn to a life of service, compassion, and ministry, the Holy Spirit may be stirring your heart toward the Permanent Diaconate.
