Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a sign of Christ’s compassion for those who are suffering. Through the prayer of the Church and the ministry of a priest, those who are seriously ill receive strength, forgiveness, peace, and the healing presence of Jesus.

This sacrament is not only for those who are near death. It may be celebrated when someone is seriously ill, preparing for surgery, living with chronic illness, or experiencing the frailty that can come with advanced age.

In the Anointing of the Sick, the Church prays for physical healing when it is God’s will and always asks for spiritual healing: courage, comfort, hope, and trust in God’s love. This sacrament also brings consolation to families and caregivers who accompany the sick.
