All employees and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are required to submit applications, authorize background checks, attend Protecting God's Children training, and complete other monthly requirements to comply with Safe Environment policies.
Volunteers who work with children are also required to comply with these policies. These requirements do not apply to volunteers who work exclusively with adults over the age of 18. This includes, lectors, greeters, money counters, and members of parish councils.
This process is simplified as much as possible within the limits of Maine State and Federal laws and rules. The Diocese of Portland does not conduct any financial background checks at any point.
Review the relevant steps below to complete your employment application, apply to become an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, or volunteer with children.

For those who have who have received a job offer from a school or parish:
- Fill out the required paperwork. Most fields may be filled in electronically, though we cannot accept digital signatures.
- Initial Background Check Information Form
- Department of Health and Human Services Form
- Fair Credit Reporting Act Authorization Form. Note: The Diocese will never perform financial record checks. Only checks for criminal records, motor vehicle history, sex offender registry, and child abuse records will be conducted.
- Diocesan Code of Ethics. Read the entire Code of Ethics. You can choose to save paper by only printing, initialing, and signing the Appendix B page.
- Register for a Virtus Account and Protecting God’s Children Training (see below)
- Bring printed and hand-signed forms to the office you will be working with. For example, school faculty should return paperwork to the school, parish staff should return paperwork to the parish office, and diocesan staff should return paperwork to human resources.
- Fill out the required paperwork. Most fields may be filled in electronically, though we cannot accept digital signatures.

- Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in-Church nly are not required to take the class or read monthly bulletins.
- Bring printed and hand-signed forms to your parish office.
- Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion to a homebound family member are not required to submit any forms. Contact your pastor to begin the approval process.

Registering for a Virtus Account and Protecting God’s Children Training
Before you start:
- We recommend using a laptop or desktop computer for this process.
- Once you start, you must complete all steps. Failure to do so may cause the system to time out and delete your progress.
- Make sure to use your full legal name as it appears on your driver’s license or passport for both Virtus and FASTRAX Select®.
- If there is a discrepancy in the registration or the names entered, the approval process will be delayed.
- If you do not finish the FASTRAX Select® process, your application will be delayed.

Virtus Registration Instructions
Visit www.virtusonline.org
Click on “First Time Registrant”
Select “Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland”
Create a Username and password.
Follow prompts to provide your personal information, select your primary location and role, and answer all pertinent questions.
Select a Virtus Protecting God’s Children for Adults class.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion in-Church only are not required to take the class or read monthly bulletins.
Follow the links to the “National Background Check Selection.”
The Virtus system will automatically take you to the website of FASTRAX Select®. Read the instructions carefully and follow the directions through the process. Be sure to click “Submit” when finished.
The process will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.Failure to provide all required information will delay your application and may cause it to be rejected.
