Archives
The purpose of the Diocesan Archives is to collect and preserve the official records of the Diocese of Portland, documenting the work and history of the Catholic Church in Maine. The Archives seek to promote an accurate understanding of the origins, mission, and accomplishments of the diocese, its parishes, and its affiliated institutions and organizations. Through the preservation of these historical materials, the Archives ensure that the Church’s presence and ministry in Maine are recorded for future generations.
The Diocesan Archives collection includes, but is not limited to, official Catholic directories; directories of the Diocese of Portland; bound copies of the diocesan newspaper The Church World (1931–2005); some parish histories; property deeds; and architectural blueprints. These materials collectively illustrate the development and spiritual life of the Church throughout the state of Maine. Some copyright restrictions apply.
The office hours are Mondays through Thursdays 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. by appointment only. If you are searching for information that might be in our Archives, please contact Sr. Rita-Mae Bissonnette, RSR, at (207) 773-6471.
