Bishop James Ruggieri will ordain seven men to the permanent diaconate at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
The men come from parishes across the diocese. They include Arturo Juarez-Ayala and Timothy Winkeler from the Parish of the Holy Eucharist in Falmouth, Peter Czerwinski from St. Michael Parish in Augusta, Peter Koch from the Parish of the Holy Savior in Mexico, Stephen Ritchie from the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord in Kittery, Richard Roussel from St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Westbrook, and Adam Stearns from Christ the King Parish in Skowhegan.
The diaconate is the first degree of holy orders. The word “diaconate” comes from the Greek word “diakonia,” which means “service.” Deacons are called to perform charitable works, assist priests at the altar, and preach the word of God. As ordained ministers, they may baptize children, bless marriages, and preside at funeral services outside of Mass.
