At the culmination of Black History Month, descendants of one of the first families of African descent to be buried at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine celebrates their history in Maine.

St. Michael School has named Alanna Stevenson as its new principal, a role that she will assume in the fall, at the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year. Currently the principal of St. Dominic Academy in Auburn, Stevenson brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership to St. Michael’s. Stevenson will succeed Kevin Cullen who has served as principal at the Augusta Catholic school for 10 years.

“This is the best thing that ever happened to me.” That is how 23-year-old Jonathan Gordon of Turner describes his journey to the Catholic faith.

Canned vegetables, cereal, crackers, peanut butter, and soup. They were among the more than 2,000 non-perishable food items donated by members of Corpus Christi Parish in Winslow as part of its Caring Hearts, Full Plates Food Drive.

Bishop-elect James Ruggieri, who was appointed the 13th Bishop of Portland by Pope Francis, was introduced to the people of Maine during a news conference held on Tuesday, February 13.

Bishop Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D. announces this morning that Pope Francis has named Most Rev. James T. Ruggieri, pastor of both Saint Michael the Archangel Parish and Saint Patrick Parish in Providence, RI, as the 13th Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. Most Rev. Ruggieri will be ordained and installed as bishop on May 7, 2024, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland.

During Catholic Schools Week, Bishop Deeley met with students, teachers and staff at St. John’s Catholic School in Brunswick on January 31 and St. Brigid School in Portland on February 1 as part of the annual celebrations.

Under the guidance of Pope Francis and in preparation for the second and final session of the ongoing Synod for the universal church scheduled for October 2024, every diocese in the world has been asked to host listening sessions for the public. The Diocese of Portland has scheduled three sessions on the following dates in the State of Maine:
